Leitrim County Council have this week received almost €2.1 million to improve walking and cycling infrastructure across the county in 2022. The funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) is part of a €280 million package for some 1,200 projects nationwide. This funding is designed to improve pedestrian and cycling safety while reducing traffic in towns and villages.
Leitrim County Council’s newly formed Active Travel Office will oversee the projects through the design, planning and construction phases in collaboration with the NTA.
Welcoming the funding Cathaoirleach of Leitrim County Council Cllr. Paddy O’Rourke said: “This funding is a significant investment in County Leitrim and it will lead to improved safety measure in terms of the provision of footpaths and cycleways in the towns and villages of our county. With a greater emphasis on walking, cycling and outdoor leisure activities this funding will help to put new, improved and enhanced infrastructure in place for the safety of those who choose to pursue and avail of more active means of transport in the county.
